It is now July 2008, and this item claims to have been updated ... yet nothing has changed since my review in Jan 2008: the "new" download is a binary equivalent of the old! Are these update claims as false as the promises of features that are not available in the FREE version? Pity, because it sheds a poor light on a pretty good app even though it is now becoming dated.

OK I've now tried it. It's very nice to use, with a wide range of drawing & toning tools, and you can build up colours gradually in several strokes which compensates for lack of pressure sensitive stylus. Big drawback is that it only makes 640x480 pixel jpegs (same as my screen), and worse than that, the real working resolution is 320x240: if you load an existing 640x480 image half the detail is instantly lost. So really it's only good for making PPC wallpapers I think, a cute toy rather than a serious tool unless you are happy with (effectively) 320x240 miniatures. Another minus is that it uses up 600KB of your precious storage space installing help file binaries but there seems to be no way to access the help. I can't figure out what the W-T button does, nothing happens when I press it. Some alerts freeze the display for many seconds, which is disconcerting, several times I thought it had crashed.

The download only works if you can run ActiveSync - the setup file contains the actual CAB file but won't run on a PPC, it must be run under Win9x/XP but even then will only disgorge the cab if ActiveSync is running. However I managed to stick two fingers down its throat to make it cough up the goods (I recommend ResHacker - open the EXE with it, do "Save all resources", then rename the biggest file to VSpainterLESetup.cab

Awesome! BUT lets put the record straight -- the LE version advertised does NOT have several key features: Axis Tools, Screen Distortion, Stamp Tools, etc. Having said that, what you DO get is worth the download, just don't expect everything promised. Enjoy!
